MAINLY STITCH GROUP  –  “REFLECTIONS”

Not just Reflections in water, mirrors, windows, but Reflections of thoughts, memories of times, places, people or inspirations.  The artwork often relates to a narrative which adds considerably to the depth of meaning in the work.

Mainly Stitch  is an established group of experienced artist-makers who meet regularly at Ilam in the Derbyshire Peak District.  Although the group has differed since it formed, the current members have been together for several years.

Mainly Stitch are known for their wide spread research and approach to design which encourages them to produce original work, exploring their individual enthusiasms and ways of working.

Mainly Stitch are showing a diverse collection of two and three dimensional work in a variety of media.

Individual Statements:

Ann Brammer:

Following retirement I have pursued my interest in hand making skills and multimedia work, including jewellery and larger sculptural forms.   My aim is to push the boundaries of lacemaking and stitch combining traditional skills into those of other art, textiles and fibreart disciplines.

Ann Holmes:

Marks of time, use of wide open spaces, of arable farmland and old ebony carpenter’s tools inform my current body of work. The slow rhythmic process of stitching, with thoughts of a bygone age and life’s gentle pace, giving peace in what can be a chaotic world.

Pam Keeling:

My joy is to stitch.  Since retiring I have been trying to refine the vast range of skills I have learned and practiced over the years, but find it difficult as I still enjoy working traditional techniques as much as combining fabrics and threads with print and paint for a more contemporary approach.

Pat Lewis:

I am fascinated by patterns and especially by the effect of broken light on surfaces.

I enjoy capturing patterns and effects in stitch using both hand and machine embroidery into painted or printed papers and, mostly hand dyed fabrics to interpret and develop my ideas.

Most of this exhibition is the work of a group of artists, namely Ann Brammer, Ann Holmes, Pam Keeling and Pat Lewis who have a wealth of experience and skills based around 2D and 3D stitched artwork. The other artist in the exhibition is Lesley Nixon who, through her paintings, abstracts and captures the atmosphere of our local landscape.

This exhibition is a celebration of colour and creativity and the Foxlowe Art Gallery is very pleased to be able to display this work.

The exhibition starts on Saturday, 13th July and runs through to Saturday, 7th September.

Preview Evening 7.00-9.00pm, Friday 12th July 2019.

The Foxlowe Gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday: 10am-4pm and the first Sunday of the month, 11am-4pm.
