Chilean director Sebastián Lelio won best foreign language film at this year’s Oscars, with this luminous and life-affirming portrait of a young transgender woman. Marina is a waitress and aspiring singer making tentative steps towards moving in with her partner Orlando. When he suffers a fatal aneurysm, Marina comes under suspicion by virtue of her gender identity, treated like a criminal by doctors, police and even by Orlando’s family. A superb performance from Daniela Vega as Marina is at the heart of a powerful, touching film about a truly complex, strong, fantastic woman. “It may be a timely film, but it is its timelessness, as well as its depths of compassion, that qualify it as a great one.” The Guardian.
